Each wife dreams of a hairstyle of the type “Shook her head in the morning and went to work”, however, every day a hairdryer is buzzing in the house or fixing means are being sprayed and only La Perm cat wears its “motley hairstyle” with absolute pride. Graceful waves, tight curls and playful curls fit on one small body, the cat's hair is unique in structure, and its appearance is unforgettable. Everything beautiful now, was ugly before - it is a law of nature to which every living creature obeys and La Perm is no exception.
It is interesting! The breed name LaРerm is a two-word derivative. The prefix "La" is the article used "for the beauty of speech" by the Chinook Indians, and "Perm" is a perm of the hair.
The first representative of the breed was born in a small village, near Dallas, in Oregon, USA. Linda Koehl was not an ardent fan of cats or a famous breeder, the woman lived on a farm and appreciated her pet Speedy for her agility, independence and excellent hunting qualities. In 1982, laws on the sterilization of indispensable animals did not work, and domestic cats that had access to the street bred according to the will of nature.
Speedy was not a thoroughbred cat, and the father of the kittens chose to remain unknown, however, the "fruitful relations" of the animals led to a natural mutation of the genes, which became clear on March 1, 1982. The cat arranged a nest in a dilapidated barn and called its owner at "the appointed hour." Linda did not intervene in the birth process, but she watched the darling and after 4 hours 6 kittens were born. One of the babies looked unusual, had small dimensions, a tiger pattern on the skin and was completely bald.
Linda considered the kitten inferior and decided to keep the baby at home, hoping that the baby would survive. However, after 5 weeks, strange things started to happen. The "weak" baby actively grew, was active, and her body began to be covered with long curly hair. By the age of 4 months, a pretty woman with a luxurious wavy "fur coat" frolic in a pack of kittens. Linda called kitty Kurley, which in Russian would have sounded like Kucheryashka.
The new ward of Linda, who remained to live on the farm, went in the footsteps of her mother and, reaching one year of age, gave birth to her first offspring. In fact, this was a "turning point", all kittens were born naked or with very short hair, and after 6 weeks, turned into "curls." Linda had not yet suspected that Curley was the bearer of a unique, dominant Rex gene. Watching the growth of curly offspring, studying literature and pedigree guides, the woman each time came to the conclusion that she was dealing with unique animals.
Linda took two young cats to the local show and showed her pets “out of competition”. The "burning eyes" of the audience and the balanced opinion of experts agreed on one thing - the breed needs to be developed. However, the spontaneous propagation of "curlers" lasted 10 years, which significantly expanded and strengthened the gene pool of genealogy.
Only in 1992, the La Perm cat breed came to an exhibition in Portland as a candidate for the title of a new breed. Spectators constantly crowded around the cages with four curly-haired participants, Linda listened to praise, good luck wishes and compliments to her beloved cats. Under the leadership of Linda and with the support of geneticists and breeders, the first La Perm club was created.
The painstaking work, writing standards, annual applications for recognition and visiting exhibitions in the status of "applicant" practically exhausted the breeder, however, efforts are always rewarded and in 2002, TICA (International Cat Association) recognized the breed. In 2008, La Perma received champion status, and in 2011 world recognition.
A curly cat has some similarities with “rexes,” however, it is a carrier of a dominant gene, that is, all kittens born from La Perm will have pedigree features. "Kucheryashka" has medium or small dimensions, all cats vary from 4 to 5.5 kg, cats - from 2 to 3.5.
The breed description standard is as follows:
- Head - small, proportional. A wedge-shaped muzzle with smooth curves. Cheekbones are underlined by "whiskers". The cheeks are tightened, the chin is underlined, the bite is correct.
- Eyes - wide open, almond-shaped, set close to the bridge of the nose.
- Nose - proportional, is in line with the chin. The nose is wide, tapering to the nasal pad. Transition from nose to forehead with a slight bend.
- Ears - large, upright and upright, rounded. The inside of the auricle is covered with wavy hair. Over the ears, the hair is curled into strong curls.
- Neck - long, muscular, flexible.
- Body - proportional, chest wide, not lowered. The coat of the back is decorated with unevenly lying wavy hair, elastic ringlets on the chest.
- Paws - slender, long, strong. The brush is rounded, compact.
- Tail - equal to the distance from the croup to the shoulder blades, smooth, tapers towards the end. The coat is long, reminiscent of a sheared cloth of sheep’s fur.
The color of the wool of the iris is not organic standard. The most common are red, tricolor (tortie) and tabby (spots, stripes). La Permov is usually divided into short and long-haired. Shorthair representatives have a stiffer outer hair, tail, mane and decorating hair are so elastic that they resemble artificial bristles. The long-haired La Perm has a more silky fur coat, and at the age of 4-5 years old acquires a decorating collar, longer hair on the stomach, hind legs and tail.
Cats do not have a thick undercoat, and the coat itself is divided and should not be tangled. One of the ways to assess the quality of the coat is by observing the hairs during air vibrations, curls should sway, which is why judges blow on La Permov when evaluating the exterior. It should be noted that the intensity of the "curl" may vary depending on air humidity, age and hormonal background of the animal.
La Perm kittens can be born hairless, curly-haired, or smooth-haired. Naked kittens are overgrown with wavy hair by 8-10 weeks. Toddlers born with curls wipe their hair, and then grow into a new, curly hair. Smooth kittens, subject to mating rules, are rarely born, babies inherit the breed genes, but are not allowed for breeding. The risk of "marriage" is due to chaotic mating of the first representatives of the breed.
Note! Frankly a smooth-haired kitten will not outgrow and will not “curl up”. Cases of acquiring a re-structure of the coat are exceptions, and even if the cat has several wavy strands, it will not have breeding value.
Character and education
Strong, well-developed animals remain kittens, or rather, adolescents up to 2 years of age. Active games and communication are all that a curly-haired friend needs. La Perm love height. Animals enthusiastically climb onto cabinets or sit on the owner’s shoulders. The pet will never give up the affection and society of a person, and it doesn’t matter here just to sit on one’s lap or play, most importantly, attention.
Attitude towards strangers is a formed instinct. If a cat is accustomed to guests from an early age, the animal is happy to communicate with strangers. Insulation in childhood will help instill caution and restraint. Do not punish or shame the cat for its caution, normal conversation is best for La Perms.
"Curls" prefer to live in a house with a personal territory, but without any difficulty adapts to the apartment. To compensate for the needs, pets are taught to leash and walks. La Perma are talkers, no, cats don’t scream for any reason, they purr softly, barely noticing the owner’s attention.
The relationship with the children is rather delicate, La Perm is a companion, he feels the obligation to protect the “human cub”. However, if the little one grabs kitty by the tail or is not indifferent to curls, the pet will prefer to sleep in a secluded place while the child is looking for entertainment. Dogs and other cats are friends and partners in games, most importantly, mutual respect, full attention of the owner and a sufficient area of the home.
Maintenance and care
Many cat lovers, after studying the photo of "curls" are alarmed by a hypothetically complex hair care. Do not worry, in fact, minimal care. La Perma practically does not fade and they do not need to be bathed regularly. If your pet is smeared beyond recognition, after the bath, the wool does not need to be dried. Comb the fur coat once every 2 weeks, and water is used as a means for “styling” - sprinkle wool on the side and twist curls with your fingers.
Important! Flea and other blood-sucking parasites are categorically contraindicated in La Permam, fraught with severe allergies and dermatitis. The cat needs regular preventive treatment and examinations.
Of course, the main aspect of care is proper and balanced nutrition. An elegant fur coat constantly needs vitamins, a strong skeleton in microelements, and an active disposition of a pet in calories. Do not forget that La Perma is very fond of licking and use a paste that dissolves wool to prevent bowel obstruction.
La Perma has sensitive skin, which can cause dermatitis. Otherwise, “curls” are absolutely healthy cats that need standard vaccinations and preventive visits to the veterinarian.
Note! La Permov is not recommended to lift at the withers.
