Manx

“Half-moon,” the Manx cat meowed, running the last into Noah's ark. The doors of the ark closed and pinched her long tail. Manks chose to remain without a tail, but recover in a saving voyage along with everyone. So, according to legend, a breed appeared. The cat lost its tail, and the world has acquired a new breed.

History of breed origin

Legend is a legend, but the origin of the Manx cat is foggy. The characteristic English fog, because it seems that it was fog and bad weather that contributed to the fact that the ship of the Spanish Armada was flooded near Cape Spanish Head.

The tailless cat, which before that lived rats on a ship, swam to the Isle of Man and found shelter there.

It happened in about 1500. Geographical isolation led to the fact that rescued cats felt at ease on the island, impurities of other blood did not happen on Maine and taillessness among cats began to prevail, having formed a new breed.

The breed has become famous since the end of the 19th century. So, the owner of a beautiful cat of the breed Manx Charles Henry Lane published the first standard of the breed in 1903!

And in the 20-30 years of the last century, the breed came in popularity!

True, it is limited to most of the Scandinavian countries and America. Yes, the homeland of the Manxes England is still devoted to the breed. But in Europe, in Ukraine and in Russia, this breed is practically not found, but it is a pity, the breed is original and unique!

Manx breed description

Is every tailless cat a manx and is every manx a tailless? Lack of a tail - is it an advantage or a disadvantage? And what features did the cat acquire by losing its tail? There are many questions, and the breed standard gives answers. By the way, you may be interested in the breed American Bobtail.

  1. Kittens are stupid comrades. Their head is almost round, it is wide and large:
  • cheekbones broad, protruding;
  • the nose is medium, there is no stop, the transition from the forehead to the muzzle is smooth;
  • eyes are large and slanting. The lack of slanting is a disqualification sign. Eye color can be any, in harmony with the main coat color. White cat Manx - blue, red eyes, or color is allowed;
  • the ears are wide, the tips of the ears are rounded. Characteristic features of the breed - if you look at the animal’s head from behind, the ears and crown are shaped like a saddle;
  • the neck is short, muscular.
  1. Body

What does a Manx kitten look like? Like a big and fluffy balloon! Manks have a round everything - head, eyes, torso and paws. But these nice roundness should not be excessive. However, an elongated body is also unacceptable for representatives of this breed.

The size of the body is medium, the overall silhouette is square, the back is visibly heavier than the front, the shape of the croup is similar to an orange.

The hind legs are longer than the front, the limbs are powerful with well-developed muscles. The paws are round, the pads on the paws also have a round shape.

The tail for menks is a relative concept. Whether it’s not or not, most often, what the tail looks like does not look like a tail at all. Tail differences are as follows:

  • Dimple rumpy or rumpy - complete absence of caudal vertebrae;
  • Riser or rumpy riser - those few coccygeal vertebrae that are, are hidden and almost invisible under the hair;
  • Stumpy - the tail is a little noticeable, it consists of literally 1-3 caudal vertebrae, which are also anomalously crooked;
  • Tailed or longy - tail of the usual length, but can also be hooked.

The minimum weight of representatives of this breed is 3.5 kg, and the maximum is 5.5 kg

  1. Wool

Cats of the male breed are plush to the touch. This plushness is achieved through double wool. And the "duality" is due to the fact that the outer hair is longer than the undercoat and it does not fit snugly against the body. Some compare the coat of a Manx tailless cat with a rabbit. Comparison is enhanced by looking at how the manx moves. They do not walk and do not run, but move in leaps. So how do you determine that you are not a rabbit? Rabbits do not meow!

  1. Color.

There are no restrictions on the color of Men’s kittens; it can be any. The radically black color is as good as the tortoiseshell, or gray, or rainbow-colored, but only in the USA the chocolate, Siamese, and lilac manxes or a combination of these colors with white are not recognized.

Character

No wonder they say that tailless kittens served as rat-catchers on pirate ships. The pirate cat retained some ship skills, however, some lost. Yes, this cat is still able to catch a mouse or a bird and put its prey to the bed of the pirate Flint, that is, the owner, of course. But the male cat is completely unable to climb trees. However, she loves to look at the water for a long time and bewitched (just don’t think that she likes to swim in it). The ship's past makes itself felt!

The absence of a tail does not prevent her from showing emotions by all other available means. Indeed, for this, the cat has four more legs, a rumbling motor in the chest and an expressive mustache! Especially close menksy converge with children. Still, unlike other breeds, they are not threatened to be dragged by the tail!

Manx reviews are most positive. The character of these cats are very friendly and patient. They, of course, are not the fastest cats in the world, but are pretty playful, and moving around the apartment in jumps, they play and play with pleasure.

This breed is very suitable for those families in which there are several children, because then Manx himself will not be bored, and will not let others.

Health

The historical isolation of the breed led to the fact that Manxes acquired diseases characteristic of this breed only.

Most often, experts highlight the Manx syndrome. In the case of this disease, the kitten’s spine grows too slowly and the animal lives no more than 4 months. If you get a kitten of this breed, be sure to pay attention to the structure of its pelvis - is there any dystrophy of the hind limbs.

Another disease characteristic of these cats is pyoderma of the back of the body. Due to pyogenic microbes, inflammation of the skin begins. Of course, only a veterinarian can determine pyoderma and prescribe antibiotics.

In small menxes, corneal dystrophy may begin. This is corneal edema that threatens to pass into a corneal ulcer.

Cases of congenital spinal hernia, limb weakness, and impaired coordination may also occur.

Life expectancy: 12-15 years.

Care and maintenance

If the health of a representative of the Manx tailless breed needs to be monitored closely, then there are no problems with caring for it.

What can not be done?

He cannot fall, because without a tail, Manx is simply not able to fall correctly and the consequences of a fall can be severe. Make sure your Englishman does not climb too high.

But they can jump high and watch these jumps is pure pleasure.

The thick hair of these cats is prone to the formation of tangles, therefore, in the arsenal of hair care products there should be combs and a furminator. Manx wool should be combed weekly, and during molting - 2 times a week.

Rinse your eyes regularly and clean your ears.

Feeding

Manksi - kittens are not spoiled. What they give, then they eat. But the price of good health is usually good nutrition.

Of the ready-made feeds, it is better to give them only super-premium class feeds.

For natural nutrition, exclude from the menu a raw egg, legumes, river fish and undivided sea.

Since these animals are prone to rapid growth, they must also be given vitamins and calcium.

Scalp or frozen frozen lean meat, offal, dairy products, cereals - this is what you usually need to feed a Manx cat.

A photo

There is a book in the Douglas Manx museum in which the description and pictures tell about this cat. A couple of centuries ago, the British were sure that tailless cats bring good luck. This is probably why the Manks have become the island's emblem! They can often be seen in the photo, on souvenir cards.

Where to buy a kitten

Fans of the breed say that King Edward VII himself, being the Prince of Wales, kept a Manx cat in the palace. I must say that the king was very lucky, because in Moscow, Kiev or Minsk it is very difficult to buy a tailless kitten of this breed. Nurseries and breeders have not yet paid attention to this breed. How much is a cat of the Manx breed is understandable only from foreign sources. The average cost of a kitten is 30,000 rubles (10,000 hryvnias).

But where to buy such a handsome man?

Look for the Manky tailless breed nursery abroad, focusing on the reputation of the nursery and real customer reviews. And, of course, book your kitten in advance.
